TransFair is a non-profit making association, with the goal of promoting
producer families in third world countries and of improving their conditions of
work and life by fair trade.
Fair trade particularly supports the disadvantaged small farmers and their self-help
initiatives. The organizations campaign for the lasting development of ecology,
education and support for women.
Altogether, 531 farming-cooperatives and plantations in 55 countries of Africa,
Asia and Latin America profit at present from fair trade. Approximately 1 million
farmers and workers are represented in these cooperatives.
At Lubs we support the fair trade by sourcing raw materials directly from the
producers – for example dates for our date sweets.
In the oasis Hazoua in the south of Tunisia, where still today oasis commerce
takes place in the traditional way, small farmers have united in a cooperative.
The cooperative supplies the export station Beni Greb, in which it is also involved.
The sorting, cleaning, drying and packing of the dates for the export take place
in the export station. The farmers of the cooperative receive higher prices than
otherwise usual. Labour time in the plantation and the export station is less
than in other date enterprises. Wages are clearly above the average. No child
labour is allowed in the Beni Greb project.
Additionally to the higher producer’s price a fair trade premium is paid
for social projects.
